Wow, this is a vast improvement over my 8 year old shredder...no doubt about that, but it stands on its own in features, ability, and QUIETNESS! Fellowes is an excellent brand so, even before checking reviews, I knew this would be the brand for me this time around.

First of all, I love how much more quiet this is than my old 5 sheet shredder. It doesn't make that type of sound, like you are putting a body into a wood chipper, like the old ones did so that is a vast improvement.

I love not having to open up every credit card solicitation envelope, unfold everything, then shred. This shredder will take it right down, as long as it isn't a particularly thick item (up to 15 sheets).

So far I tried it on one credit card...zip! done! That rocks! The safety features are great. I tested it by just running my hand over the top while shredding. The safety light came on and it stopped immediately.

The shredder came with a couple of the liner bags. I appreciate that because I can decide if I like them before buying them. I'm not sure I'm going to like them and they really aren't necessary since the bin slides out easily for disposing of the contents. It also came with a little bottle of oil. It looks like enough oil to last a good long time, so don't bother buying the upsell bottle of oil!

There are wheels, two of which have breaks, that easily snap in (this is nice because this shredder is large and kind of heavy). The instruction sheet for that doesn't tell, or show, you where the ones with breaks go so I don't know if it matters, but I put them on the back.

It also comes with a little vertical file type thing that you slide on to the back. I suppose that is for your shredding pile but I am using it for the bags, oil, and the instruction booklet. With this bad boy I don't think I am going to let a backlog of shredding pile up! zip zip and you're done.

This shredder is incredible! I've owned it for about a month now and have used it daily. The first time I used it, I had a ton (one and 1/2 thirty gallon trash bags full when done shredding) of personal papers to shred, as I had been saving up till I got a new shredder. This shredder does a good job but I think it is over-rated as to how many sheets you can run through at one time and to the noise level. Like most other shredders I have used in the past, you can count on the ratings to be inflated by a factor of two. This shredder comfortably handles about half the number of sheets claimed, certainly makes noise (although not as shrill as cheaper machines), and cannot shred all of your unopened junk mail. I found some pieces of junk mail choked the shredder.

Cons for the 89Ci: 1) Louder then I expected (may be I have an issue with mine?)...but it seems to shred with no problems, and 2) I had an issue with the wheels--difficult to install.

This is a fairly nice and quiet shredder that just works for the most part. I originally purchased a large, quiet shredder from Staples but it burned out the motor (with a big cloud of smoke) in the first week so I returned it for a refund and purchased this smaller shredder from Amazon.

Overall, I like this shredder because it is so quiet and just works for the most part. One of the disadvantages is it does not shred CDs and credit cards very well. It does shred them, but it usually stops shredding part way through, backs up, pauses, and then continues shredding. Other than this minor annoyance, the shredder works fine. More importantly, it doesn't stop shredding after a full basket due to overheating like the Staples shredder.

Another downside is that the bags do not fit in the basket very well, but this seems to be true of most shredders. The problem is that the front of the basket is higher than the other three sides so the bag more or less just "lays" in the front of the basket since there's no place to "tie down" the bag in front.

After using the shredder for almost a year now, it's still going as strong as the day I bought it and I have discovered a few other nuances in that time. The shredder supports "jam prevention" and is the primary reason it occasionally stops and backs up before continuing shredding if it detects excessive torque on the motor.

I also discovered that when the "bag full" light comes on, replace the bag instead of ignoring the light. The first time the "bag full" light came on, I packed the paper down a little tighter and continued shredding until the "bag full" light came on a second time. Unfortunately, I did myself a disservice because the bag ripped on something in the front of the bin. Bought this shredder to replace an older Fellowes shredder. We are currently putting all our paper files onto CD so we have an unusual amount of shredding to do in a day. Shredder advertises that it can do 850 sheets in a 5 minute period. We've tested that theory and it is capable of doing that amount. It hasn't overheated at any point and we probably push it a little more than we should. Typically, we shred several hundred pages per day. Haven't had any problems. Seems to handle the paper load well although I think 15 sheets at a time is a bit more than it actually "likes" to do. It will shred that amount but it goes into an overdrive mode to do it. Does 10 at a time with no problem and it's pretty fast. Was noisy the first few days - seemed to be from the pull out bin vibrating but has since gone away. It is not super quiet but can run it while on the phone w/o to much interference. We shopped around - Amazon had the best price at $155 with free shipping. Did read other reviews that the exteneded warranty wasn't worth the price as Fellowes tries to get out of replacing or fixing. I just bought this shredder so this is more of a preliminary review.

I bought this one to replace an OfficeMax shredder I still have.
The OfficeMax shredder is a very good one, very quiet and does a reasonably good job. Unfortunately I abused it by feeding in stuff that was a bit too much for it. Now it will only shred on one side, so it needed to be replaced.

So I bought the Fellowes Intellishred SB-89Ci Shredder.

This is a sturdy shredder. What I particullarly like about it is the electronic sensor that warns you ahead of time that you are putting too much in too shred. In fact it won't turn on at all if the stack is too thick. So I simply take a few sheets out till the red light turns of and it gobbles it up in seconds. Just under 6 seconds. The rated speed is 10 feet per minute which means 12" every 6 seconds. So an ll" sheet takes a bit less.

Like some have said it is a bit loud. Louder than my old shredder, but it is a low growl more or less. You can tell it has a very powerful motor and I expect it to last a while. By the way it comes with a 2 year warranty on the whole shredder (by the manufacturer) and a life time warranty on the teeth.

The shreds are very small so it takes a while for the bin to fill. I can usually compress it a couple of times before I need to empty it.

I expect it will last a while.

I bought this shredder to replace a previous Fellowes shredder that had stopped feeding. When I contacted the comnpany the indicated that the repair parts for the old unit were no longer available. I disassembled the old one, and, found out that it required only two nylon gears to put it back in running condition. why the most critical parts of the machine were not made of more durable material defies common sense. So much for repair, reuse, and recycle.

Therefore, I was forced to buy a new machine. I shopped around local big box stores, office supply shops, and the internet. My finding was that although a few units were availalbe in local stores, the selection was usually quite limited. That sense was magnified a hundred times when I began looking on the internet at all the units and manufactureres that produced shredders. In the end, I decided to take the chance on another Fellowes machine, the 89ci which is a small business unit that I will use only in the home. It seemed to offer the best value of all the others I reviewed for the unse I intended it.

I oped for a "business strength" unit for home use to potentially avert a recurrence of the failure with my former machine. I was pleased with the way the 89ci was packed and shipped, and, it worked well right out of the box. I did not find the paper tray included that was referred to in the packing list, but, I really don't need it anyway. Also, the instruction sheet is marginal at best and fails to provide definite guidelines for how often to oil the unit. (A number of internet articles suggest oiling at least each time you empty the bin. The most practical advice on how to do this seems to be by squirting a zig-zag oil track across a sheet of paper as you shred it.

The machine is touted to never jam. That statement is a bit of stretch of the word. Too much paper will make this machine just "stop", like all the others. However, this machine will eventually power through on its own, or, you can give it a power assist by pushing on the "hyper power" ring surrounding the main power switch. This does prevent the onerous task of removing a jammed stack of pages from the feed slot, but, the machine still stops if overfed. (I guess I'm looking for something equivalent to a tree chipper that will take whatever it is fed and shred it!)

The 89ci has a "power on" switch on the back and a switch on the top lower right front corner of the top which serve duplicate functions. One could be left off. Also, there is a cascade of lights on the top right that indicate when the feed load will slow/stop the machine. This is also overkill. A single warining light would be more than enough. Finally, the "on" switch incorporates a light that is totally unnecessary. When you feed the machine and it is turned on, then, the machine should shred. If it fails to work, then turn it on. The elimination of the fancy light cascade and the "on" light would reduce the consumption of power when the machine is not working and eliminate and unnecessary switch that can potentially fail.

The separate CD/credit card shredder slot feature is a disappointment. It is very difficult to make the machine feed a single credit card size object. It will not grab it and feed. I have had the best luck just sandwiching such cards between sheets of paper and using the regular feed.

All in all, I am satisfied with the sturdiness of the unit and the way in which it functions. But, it could be simplified and improved by removing all the bells and whistles and concentrating on making from follow function, potentially making the machine more durable and economical. I am hopng that I don't face a similar failure with this macine and the nylon gearing mechanism. Use the production savings from the switch and the light cascade mentioned above to make the nylon gears out of steel and improve the durability of the machine by a quantum leap!

Besides being able to shred 8-9 pieces of paper at a time quickly, this shredder is extremely quiet. It never even hesitated in shredding a credit card and thick envelopes and inserts are effectively destroyed.

I tried one of the plastic collection bags that comes with it but quickly realized they cut way down on the capacity of the receptacle and they tear when you try to remove them when full because of the angles on the interior of the receptacle. Besides, you don't really need the bags...just shred right into the pull out bin and dump the trash.

I am not able to provide a long, in depth, review of this product. I have had it for one month. Even though I have purchased it for home use and have used it so little, I am happy with it's performance so far. Did I need such an expensive unit? Maybe not, but after reading about it, I am hopeful I will never have to buy another one. I like the casters and the pull out bin. My former unit I had to lift off the head to empty it. Also it is larger then you may need for home use. I can live with that. I bought because of a gut feeling after reading up. Have not tried shredding a credit card or CD as yet, but I am sure it will perform if I give it the test. This is our fifth shredder, but this one, somewhat more expensive than our previous units, we really like. It is relatively quiet, given what it is doing, and it is easy to empty. The large integrated waste basket slides out easily. We've tried the plastic bags, which work just fine, but tend not to use them because we recycle our paper and cannot dump it in plastic bags. We have found that we can fill the plastic bag and use that to transfer the contents into a paper bag for recycling..It's kind of an extra step that doesn't save a lot of effort or time. The Bin Open light works and has the side effect of turning off the Over Heat light until the Bin is closed. The Bin Full light never comes on. The last shredder we bought for our home office. we went on the cheap, figuring we wouldn't require large loads or heavy sheaves of paper. We ended up overloading it with outdated files and burned out the motor. Then, we discovered the Fellowes 3228901 by searching the net for a new one that would be heavier duty, quiet (the other one sounded like a lawnmower), and yet be unobtrusive as a piece of furniture, fitting neatly under one edge of a work table. The 3228901 was attractive, well reviewed, and better yet, on sale. The little panel of lights tells you when you are putting too much or the wrong folds of paper through the chopper, and stops you before you jam it. It has all kinds of fool-proof detectors to keep it in good shape despite the operator. It shreds paper into little accordian strips but doesn't dice it, but that's okay. A blue "on" light lets you know if you forgot to turn it off, which is done with a rear mounted toggle switch, to discourage little hands from operating it (two buttons to turn it on).
A supply of plastic refill waste bags comes with it; other refills can be bought in stores. You can stretch this by emptying them into your standard plastic garbage bag and putting the empty back in the box. They fill up pretty fast with about a ream of paper each, counting the air. All in all, though, we're happy with it: cool looking, efficient, quiet, and doesn't give you back talk; and it gets rid of all those outdated files we'd been storing. Fellowes has been in the business a long time and has updated their products in response to customer suggestions. They obviously read the reviews. No complaints on this one. This shredder met and exceeded my expectations. I recommend it. The specs are accurate. Unit is surprisingly quiet. The SB-89Ci will gobble 15 sheets of typical 20# copy/printer bond or credit cards without any sign of strain. It is quiet and jam proof. When the system is overloaded, wait about 10 seconds. The unit will either power through the jam or back up enough to allow pulling the jammed material out. The load Indicator "teaches" what is an appropriate load. One minor issue, if you continue shredding after the indicator shows the bin is full, removing the bin will cause a minor mess as confetti overflows the back of the bin. Better to empty the bin often to avoid stray confetti. The unit shipped with a small starter bottle of oil and a few bags. The Fellowes plastic bags and lubricating oil are not necessary and pricy. I used corn oil (suggested in the instructions). We stock Mazola for cooking and it works well. Canola oil is fine too. Lubrication is easy. Probably, I lubricated more often than instructions indicated. The unit becomes quieter and works easier with frequent lubrication. I keep re-filling that small oil bottle. As for bags, the supplied sample bags are cheap star seal bottoms, 30" wide and 15" deep. My wife is very frugal recycling things. So I have had many different bags to use. Department store shopping bags work fine. We received a supply of 24" by 24" light duty plastic bags in the mail. These work fine. I suggest re-using the original sample bags and dumping the refuse into larger disposal bags. I have already recommended this shredder to my friends. I also recommend Amazon.com. Their price was lower than any other source. Even though I opted for the slowest free shipping, the actual shipping time was four days less than their outside estimate from the order placement to receipt. I'm sure this shredder performs well (if it even works), as one might infer from all the great reviews. I just wish it actually worked for me. The first time my SB-89 arrived, the motor was defective, so it obviously wasn't able to shred anything. Thankfully, Amazon sent a replacement, which arrived shortly afterward. The second time, it arrived with a vital part of the paper bin broken off. This plastic part was necessary to notify the shredder that the paper bin was safely in. Since the part was broken off, the shredder was permanently deactivated...

I have used Fellowes shredders in the past, and have been pleased with them. These Intellishred models however, seem to be very poorly built. I have asked Amazon to give me a full refund, and will not be getting another replacement.
